Part Deux

A couple days  behind here, as is often the case with this anymore.  Let's pretend it's Friday night, just like the fudged timestamp says.

We knew that the ride from N'Awlins to San Antonio was going to be a 2-day affair.  At some point, we decided to make Galveston the overnight stop. Being a beach town, we thought it wise to make a reservation as well, and then it's no longer a 'wing it' day.  But being well past the midway point at 400+ miles, it became necessary to get on the road early, especially if we wanted to get in early enough to enjoy the beach.  It also meant more interstate and less wandering the bayous.

So, Thursday was back to the room early to pack and prep. Friday morning, we were bouncing down the crappy streets and up on the Crescent City Connector, crossing the river for the 3rd time, and heading west for good.  We did stick to US-90 out to Lafayette, where we jumped on the big road and unraveled the throttle cable.

Here's what you need to know about Louisiana:

  • Louisiana is basically a bunch of canals and pumps.  I'm not sure what the difference is  between it and the Everglades, except the Louisianans seem determined to live on their swamp.
  • As a result, an amazingly high portion of roadway is built on stilts.  Miles and miles and miles of I-10 and US-90 are 3 feet above "land."
  • An amazingly high portion of roadway is in terrible condition.  More so the actual land parts.  Worst roads by far of the entire trip.
  • Mississippi is cotton and Louisiana is refineries.

Also, at a fuel stop somewhere before Texas, we encountered a native who spoke Cajun, which is a foreign language based loosely on English, French, and Redneck.  He saw our PA plates, and asked us if our Yee P.S. was broken.  We understood a small portion of what he said, and wished him luck with his dog and flat tire before firing up and taking off.

Texas is next.
